From the July 2026 Transactional Analysis Journal (TAJ), the free-access article is “Losing Women’s and Diverse Voices in the Name of Safety: Reframing Client Vulnerability in Psychotherapy Research” by Rachel Curtis (2026).

In research, the presumption of vulnerability, although often well-intentioned, risks silencing the very voices whose stories need to be told. Likewise, attempts at reducing harm may inadvertently reproduce the very dynamics of disempowerment that research seeks to address. This article aims to inform transactional analysis researchers of the patriarchal and institutional barriers that lead to the overprotection and resultant silencing of clients within counseling and psychotherapy research, particularly women and individuals labeled as “vulnerable.” It challenges the prevailing narrative that exclusion safeguards clients, arguing instead that this stance often reflects unconscious bias and a paternalistic disregard for client voice and autonomy.

Curtis (2026) highlights how such exclusion can inadvertently perpetuate marginalization by silencing client voices, particularly women who have experienced sexual or gendered violence, and denies them the opportunity to contribute to research that could inform and improve psychotherapeutic practices. By interrogating institutional, ethical, and organizational frameworks, the article exposes the imbalance between risk aversion and potential benefits, such as empowerment, representation, and more inclusive evidence bases. The critique urges a reevaluation of ethical protocols and calls for a shift toward more nuanced, Adult-centered approaches that respect clients’ rights to self-determination and acknowledge their capacity to provide informed consent, thereby promoting equity and inclusivity in research participation.
