The European Association for Transactional Analysis (EATA), in collaboration with the International Transactional Analysis Association (ITAA), will host a virtual event examining the intersection of culture, power, and mental health practice on Thursday, Oct. 1. By framing clinical practice within social, cultural, and historical contexts, this co-hosted initiative reflects a broader movement within the global psychotherapy community to foster practice that is genuinely inclusive, politically conscious, and responsive to diverse identities.
Titled "A decolonising journey from the radical roots of TA to intersectional TA," the 90-minute session aims to challenge conventional psychological paradigms and address structural inequalities long embedded in the field.
Led by Victoria Baskerville, a Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst (TSTA) and founder of the Transactional Analysis (TA) East London Institute, the webinar will guide clinicians and practitioners through a critical process of deconstructing and reconstructing psychological theory. Baskerville (2025) argues that traditional TA and mainstream psychotherapy have historically overlooked the impacts of colonization, systemic racism, and power dynamics.
Drawing from her work establishing the institute in East London, Baskerville will illustrate how identity, social positioning, and political history influence both the practitioner and the client. The session will trace the trajectory of TA from its radical origins to a contemporary, intersectional approach capable of addressing real-world systemic oppression.
The primary objective of the webinar is to prompt attendees to interrogate their own roles within broader systems of oppression and evaluate how personal biases and institutional constructs shape therapeutic work.
