As representatives of the two committees responsible for the accrediting processes in transactional analysis (TA)—the Commission of Certification (COC) of the European Association for Transactional Analysis (EATA) and the International Board of Certification (IBOC) of the International Transactional Analysis Association (ITAA)—we hereby inform members of both associations about decisions regarding oral exams.

To our delight, the number of candidates seeking accreditation and taking their exams is rising. This means that the worldwide TA community is growing, which is certainly a very good development.

The decisions communicated here result from discussions about how best to work together to accommodate this rising demand. Experience shows that many candidates holding EATA contracts have sought to take their final accreditation step—the oral exam—online with the IBOC. This led to high candidate numbers, making it challenging for IBOC online exam supervisors to staff enough exam boards with ITAA examiners and volunteers.

The way forward from 2027

The COC will start organizing online Certified Transactional Analyst (CTA) exams and exams for Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analysts (TSTA) in the spring of 2027. Please look for exact dates on the EATA webpage in the exam calendar section.

We are collaborating closely; IBOC co-chairs will share their practice and experiences from online exam events with COC supervisors. We intend to meet regularly to exchange ideas and further develop online examining.

Starting April 2027, the IBOC will limit exam places to 20 for CTA oral exams and eight for full TSTA exams (24 exam boards). Candidates who have held an ITAA membership for at least a year will be prioritized. This applies regardless of whether they hold an IBOC or an EATA contract. Candidates must be ITAA members for at least 12 months prior to the first day of their chosen exam event.

If places remain after the application deadline, the IBOC will fill them with non-ITAA applicants based on their application date. If all places are filled with ITAA members, non-members will be informed that they cannot take their exams on that date. Based on candidate numbers from recent years, we predict that with two IBOC online exam events each year, there will be enough places for ITAA members.

We hope you understand the reasoning behind these decisions and invite you to reach out to the COC or IBOC with any questions.
